Disney and Pixar’s Luca is Brought to Life with OLED Technology

Jun 24, 2021

Disney & Pixar’s Luca comes alive thanks to OLED technology, with enhanced color-accuracy and exceptional and advanced picture quality, unmatched with what other displays can deliver.

Disney and Pixar’s latest animated feature, Luca, follows the story of a boy experiencing a memorable summer on the Italian Riviera while hiding his true identity: he is a sea monster from another world. The vivid colors of Cinque Terre and the underwater world are brought to life through OLED technology, with unmatched picture quality for the most accurate color experience, as per the creator’s intent.

Disney and Pixar are known for their emotive features, with color playing a pivotal part in the viewer experience. OLED technology is used throughout the review process to provide color accuracy at every touchpoint. OLED TVs are also used to simulate the user experience while reviewing the finished feature, ensuring the characters animate in true-to-life colors across multiple devices.

Pixar’s creative workflow is a collaborative process, with creators and colorists sharing a vision in real-time. However, during the pandemic, creators had to work remotely and rely heavily on technology. As Susan Grunig, a colorist at Pixar Studio mentioned, it was essential to recreate an environment where everyone was looking at the same image, even in a remote situation. With the help of OLED, the teams could depend on specialist devices with color-accurate displays to ensure each creator was working to the same high-level spec across separate devices. With superb picture quality, self-lit pixels and color accuracy, OLED was a natural choice.

Working with OLED technology, the Luca creators maintained accurate and vivid colors through pixel dimming technology. OLED’s self-lit display illuminates each pixel to convey the kaleidoscopic hues of the underwater scenes and bright tones of the Italian Riviera, with the ability to control individual colors without affecting anything else on the screen. In animation, even the slightest color change can shift the atmosphere, so this creative control was paramount in the inception of Luca.

OLED’s 100% Live Pixel can offer perfect color and contrast control because each pixel is self-lit. OLED is the only TV that can deliver such striking colors precisely as they were intended to be seen without quality loss or exaggeration. OLED has been certified by Intertek for its 100% Color Fidelity and Accurate Picture Quality, showcasing premium content the way creators intended.

OLED showcases the magical world of Luca through the eyes of the creators: full color for a true cinematic experience. Watch Disney and Pixar’s Luca on an OLED TV in the comfort of your own home, exclusively available on Disney+*.
