Eyesafe Roundtable: A Part of OLED’s Endless Effort for Eye Health

Aug 11, 2023
Blue Light Leaders Roundtable subtitle and logo for eyesafe, LG Display, and AMD are visible on the screen.

LG Display is engaging in a wide array of efforts to provide not only the best picture quality but also to be at the forefront of health-conscious displays. To this end, LG Display has been taking part in relevant technological research and development as well as participating in various seminars and conferences. Recently, LG Display was the recipient of a certification that acknowledged its display as not only eye-health-friendly but also one that minimizes the effects on circadian rhythms.

In line with this effort, on June 28, LG Display participated in the 2023 Eyesafe® Roundtable by Eyesafe®, the US-based institution for eye safety. Eyesafe-related experts and executives of AMD and LG Display convened to discuss technology and policy measures to protect customers’ eye health in an era where screen time is increasing drastically. Find out the importance of eye health professed by experts in each field as well as LG Display’s efforts to make displays safer for your eyes.

The Effects of Blue Light on Your Health

“Blue light is what most people are exposed to during daylight as the sun is the greatest source of blue light or high visible energy frequencies. Our body knows that it should get a lot more blue light during the day and plans for it accordingly but is not used to seeing those wavelengths at that level after sundown. Exposure to blue light late in the day disrupts our circadian rhythm, negatively influencing our sleep pattern which could cause restless sleep or even insomnia.”

“Digital eyestrain is becoming a very common complaint in every eye care professional's office, and we're learning that it can significantly impact work productivity as well as individual well-being and quality of life. Reducing the exposure to high-energy blue light emitted by digital devices is an important and manageable factor in the incidence and severity of digital eyestrain.

We learn in medicine that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I believe as medical professionals, we must do our best to prevent digital devices from doing harm. Eyesafe is a dedicated global leader in reducing blue light exposureㅡan issue I think that is going to become increasingly important to the wellbeing of our patients.”

“The refresh rates of displays have gotten significantly higher and OLED technologies are providing unprecedented levels of contrast ratios. The upside is that the evolution of technology provides us with a more immersive viewing experience. But it is also the reason people are spending more and more time in front of their computers.

I believe that gamers who engage in hyper-realistic games are the most susceptible to the potential risks of blue light exposure because they are viewing screens with incredibly high refresh rates and frames per second, and they're doing it for longer than most other viewers.

For that reason, we've been early adopters of blue light mitigation technologies like what Eyesafe has to offer. We've been advocating and promoting these technologies because we want the gaming community to take charge of their eye health so that they can enjoy this hobby for the rest of their lives. We have a responsibility to do so as providers of these technologies and solutions.”

“We are well aware of eye health and are continuously conducting relevant product development and promotional activities to protect it. One such example is the gaming monitor test we performed on DRX’s professional gamers early this year.

From that event, we received positive feedback that our monitor “has superior expressions of colors and perfect black,” and that the gamers “experienced substantially lower eye fatigue even after a prolonged gaming session”, driving home once again the excellent eye-health features of LG Display’s OLED screens. Furthermore, we are also paying attention not only to blue light, but to other features such as flicker-free and low reflection.”

“The increased gaming hours since the pandemic shows no signs of decreasing. As a result, matters regarding eye health have been garnering more interest, subsequently leading to an increase in product demand that reduces eye strain while maintaining the display’s picture quality.

LG Display is avidly working on research and development to meet such customer needs. As seen in the DRX event, we are expanding the user experience of gaming monitors with an emphasis on eye health, while acquiring the stamp of approval from professional gamers.

We will not stop here and be satisfied but will continue to lead the market through OLED panels that take circadian rhythms into consideration through the lowest blue light emission in the industry.”

“It is very important to spread the word about OLED’s exclusive eye-health excellence to customers. LG Display is promoting this fact far and wide by receiving the industry’s first Circadian Friendly certification last May, given by the global testing and certification company TÜV.

TÜV’s Circadian Friendly certification evaluates a display’s effect on the sleep pattern-controlling circadian rhythm, under the condition that the display maintains its picture quality. LG Display received the highest Circadian Friendly Level 1 because OLEDs were rated to have the least effect on circadian rhythms in the industry due to their self-illuminating pixels.

We will continue our research to go beyond eye health excellence and develop a safe and user-friendly display for our customers.”
