OLED, Choice of Experts for High Quality Movie Production

Have you ever imagined how a movie is made? Creating a movie requires the collaboration of hundreds of professionals who use advanced technology and expertise during various stages to perfect aspects such as camerawork, lighting, and sound.

  • Pixar's filmmakers are working on color correction for the movie 'Luca' using OLED displays.
  • Three people are experiencing 'Guardians of the Galaxy' through Transparent OLED displays at Secret Cinema.
  • ILM's filmmaker is using OLED displays to produce Ahsoka's Times Square Billboard.
  • ILM's filmmaker is standing in front of an OLED VFX monitor and working on the film's post-production.

Movie production involves three stages: filming, post-production, and distribution. Post-production, in particular, has become increasingly important over time as the movie industry evolves, encompassing special effects, visual effects, and color correction.

Against this backdrop, LG Display's OLED is being acclaimed as the optimal display technology in the movie industry. Due to its ability to deliver undistorted, accurate colors as intended by filmmakers, renowned movie studios such as Disney, Pixar, and ILM have adopted OLED as the standard display for post-production.

Dominic Glynn, Pixar's senior color scientist, is interviewing in the theater.

“We at Pixar use OLED technology during the final review, and OLED's dynamic range and color accuracy are especially critical to our filmmaking process. During the pandemic, we were able to remotely finish Luca using OLED screens, bringing the same movie quality into people's homes. The final cut will be streamed through Disney+ or distributed through UHD Blu-ray discs, so we simulate the high-end consumer experience by using LG OLED TV as our hero display for those reviews.”

Jeroen J. Schulte, ILM's global imaging supervisor, is talking about OLED.

“We made LG OLEDs the imaging platform across all of the ILM studios across the world. OLED is deeply embedded into almost all of our production processes, including virtual production, visual effects, and live-action production workflows. LG OLED gives us that seamless experience of dreaming up something and having it created with an accurate representation.”

- Jeroen J. Schulte, Global Imaging Supervisor at ILM

Jung-jae Lee, director and actor, is interviewing in front of two OLED displays.

“As both an actor and director, I've come to trust LG OLED for its exceptional picture quality in order to preserve creative intent while reviewing content.”

Eric Pagtaconan, Disney's 3D generalist, is talking about OLED.

“My role on this project was to convert the master files from ILM so that the viewers are able to see Vadar pop through the screen when they step in front of the display. OLED's perfect black technology made it possible to realize a very high contrast ratio. Because Darth Vadar's suit was so dark, we needed these special screens to express crisp and clear details. When we created the mobile billboard with OLED technology, we were able to control this experience end-to-end so that the audiences could experience Darth Vadar as the filmmakers intended.”

Ian Galloway, creative director of Secret Cinema and Mesmer, is talking about OLED's black performance

“The reason we use OLED is because of their black performance. The deep void of space, the subtle colors of Earth or alien planets, and the magnificent details of Rocket's fur are displayed right in front of the audience's eyes. We also use OLED monitors in our content creation process as VFX and color correction monitors. These are the same screens the audience will see on site, which allows us to precisely control their experience.”

OLED, Providing the Optimal Viewing Experience Intended by Filmmakers

OLED displays provide accurate colors and perfect black, making them an optimal choice for movie professionals who have a keen eye for color and image quality. However, even audiences at home can enjoy the vivid and immersive viewing experience that OLED delivers, bringing to life the exact colors and details that the filmmakers intended.

Moving forward, OLED will relentlessly pursue innovation in technology, not only to provide the best possible viewing experience for professionals who produce movies but also for the audiences watching them. We invite you to witness OLED's commitment as it continues to captivate the imaginations of viewers.
